The artist collects clay before monsoon from various ponds of Ramgarh, District Alwar, Rajasthan to produce terracotta pottery. The types of clay are thoroughly mixed and then filtered through a fine sieve to remove small stones etc. Thereafter this mixture is kneaded by adding small quantities of water. This thick clay is then worked on potter’s wheel and using the hands and hand made tools to shape the Tea Set. The potter gives desired form to his imagination in clay on the potter wheel and creates a variety of products. To make a product needs high degree of concentration, skill, strong imagination and very special fine hand made tools. During trimming the products artist uses hand made tools and precious stone for smoothening the product, the fine lines on the Lid of small tea set have been maintained by hand tools and there is every possibility that it can break till the Tea Set is completed. After drying the items, they are rubbed by wet cotton cloth in sun light. After this, items are put in a kiln (aahva) for firing. To get temperature in kiln, artist uses wooden powder and dung for firing. This art is quite old but is popular even today.
There is no specific legend but this is very old art which is used by my forefathers. I have also learnt this art by my father who learnt from his father.
I used to make big items when I started this as a profession but my customers told me to make small items so that they can hand carry them and can gift them. Then I started making miniature terracotta.
In 2010, I made many miniature items which were preside by my customers a lot. And those miniatures were so small that one has to use magnifying glass to see them. For these, I have received the National Award.
After that I started making this Tea Set which is very attractive in because of its size and cost. People were finding it very good product for gifting and as well as for keeping it in museum.
