INTRODUCTION

As a professional sculptor, I have reached here, through a process of observation, retention and evolution. The process essentially comprises of observing the immediate surrounding, the sculptural traditions and their inherent trans-formative systems along with the experiences in the actual life with its agonies and ecstasies. This phase goes alongside a simultaneous retention of such experiences applied towards the evolution of my sculptural from. Eventually my work shows an intrinsic character of rooted-ness and contemporaneity at one and the same time. To begin with I worked on easily perceptible forms and their combination, which would be drawn from life around me and would even represent the day to day social situations. My works such as ‘Many People around the Kerosene Can’ and ‘Father by the Lamp Post are the examples of such of my earlier phase. However this phase naturally and automatically passed into a other, where the direct reference to day to day life and mundane were transcended .My interest towards transforming my visual references into exclusive intensified. Looking at some of the greatest sculptural traditions such as Egyptian, Hittite, and our own provided me with the necessary support to understand the ways and means of imparting the forms with a quality of eternal visual input and perpetual mourning. As a sculptor I do not like to make political statements. Instead I believe in the strong formal language of sculpture, which I think is more effective and universal. I trust my work indicates my belief quite clearly.

Over the past more than ten years now, I have been working in the mediums of wood and stone mainly and sometimes in other mediums such as metal and fiberglass etc.
As a professional sculptor, I believe, that sculpture is one of the strongest and most effective phenomenon, which establishes the continuity, between the tradition and the contemporaneity. The past and the present.
This feeling has always strengthened ,my belief in the use of more durable materials and also to work towards what I may call as ‘conceptual durability’. It is this feeling which initially enhanced my interest in Folklore, Myth, and Legend. Though one may not find the direct visualization of any of these in my work, yet it looks as if representing the ethos carried within our legends. My works as such are suffused with shapes that seem to have been drawn from the times erstwhile. The use of such shapes, I think, justifies my idea of ‘conceptual durability’.
