A collectors item, the shoulder yoke of this kurta is made with strips of appliqué. This appliqué is an intricate combination of circus stripe flags with a dull red piping against a grey background. This particular appliquéing has drawn inspiration from the Mukhathezhuthu or the intricate face-painting technique that Theyyam artists apply before a performance. A ritual in itself, the Mukhathezhuthu varies from Theyyam to Theyyam. Chayilyam is the red face paint that Theyyam artists use to etch intricate patterns on their faces.
