INTRODUCTION

Living in a place that is probably the most verdant part of a bustling city, nature as a muse is omnipresent and it has reflected in the bulk of the artworks I have created and sold. Ever since I started painting, nature has been my greatest source of inspiration. The beauty of flowers and their capacity to spread joy has always fascinated me and a lot of my work has buds & blossoms as a subject. I think I owe being an artist to flowers. The ever changing shades of nature and the abundance it offers is enchanting and it is an absolute joy to recreate it on a limited sized canvas. I also take pleasure in painting the everyday scenes. There is something extraordinary in every ordinary and so much beauty to be found in the nondescript ‘gallis’ of India. The rickshaw walas, auto stands, old forgotten alleys and chai walas make for an interesting subject and often it is a momentary sparkle in a child’s eye or the genuine but wry smile that catches my fancy. These works speak of our world through my eyes. Most of my wall murals at the airport and around the city of Nagpur (India) are a representation of everyday faces with unspeakable emotions. Growing up in a family of artists and hobby painters, I was introduced to painting very early in life. My father, an avid reader and academician would often give me books on art which fanned my creativity. He was truly and luckily for me, my first art teacher. However, it was in my late 20s that I decided to take it up as a profession. The call of the canvas let’s say was very strong and stronger was a desire to learn and better my craft. I sought guidance from masters by attending several workshops. Milind Mulick, Vilas Tonape and John Bayalis have been great mentors and guides in helping me hone my painting skills. With my current series I hope to shed light on…the imperfections that exist in nature in a perfectly balanced way. Not competing with each other but just existing in complete harmony. Being real.

Shagufta Mehdi expresses herself best through larger than life and breath-taking florals that find stimulus in nature. She says, “I owe being an artist to flowers.” Living amid abundantly green surroundings in the city of Nagpur, India, her muse is never far away. She paints in the representational realistic style, drawing inspiration from the 20 th century naturalist
painters. She also fearlessly treads the road of everyday paintings which capture the Indian streets in all their myriad shades and enigmas. Her two solo exhibitions Desi Musings at The Taj, Delhi and Indian Musings at Pune had this underlying theme which reflected the extraordinary stories of ordinary streets of India. Her solo exhibitions received wide coverage in the media and she was interviewed by leading newspapers, The Indian Express and Times of India. She also found her work
covered by Mirror and Mid day. But one of the high points of her career was when her painting, ‘The Pelican,’ was auctioned.
