Go Green In 2017

Every year since 2000, world renowned colour company Pantone chooses a colour that reflects the current cultural climate. It is a symbolic selection; a colour snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude. The chosen colour has historically influenced trends in all facets of design—architecture, interior décor, fashion, food, travel and more.

Go Green Planter by Poppadum Art. Symbolic of bringing Greenery in to the home

This year, the colour authority announced its choice of the shade called “Greenery” as the Colour of the Year, 2017.

A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings. The fresh and zesty yellow-green shade evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew.

Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery asks us to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate. Greenery also signifies a fresh New Year; healthier food resolutions and growing vegetarian trends; grass and the outdoors during spring and summer.

But most prominently, Greenery comments on the concept of “environment.” Obviously, “environment” today refers to the “go-green” movement—which, while not a revolutionary idea in 2017, continues to scale new highs. And any ‘ green ‘ movement is one which is a subset of a larger effort about sustainability – where one meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs.

This could be enabled by raw materials, manufacturing processes, product development. It could also be about preserving traditional craft forms and supporting communities dependent upon those traditional craft forms for their livelihood.

Our commitment to sustainability finds expression in our support for traditional craft forms such as hand-crafted pottery for a green lifestyle which can be found here.

But beyond just the natural environment, the colour reflects the world’s currently sharply divided social and political landscape. A life-affirming shade, Greenery is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality. This colour of hope speaks to what we call the ‘re’ words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, renew. Every spring we enter a new cycle of life where new shoots spring from the ground. It is something life affirming to look forward to.
